Lecture Homework
#9
Due Date: 3/24/2004 (Wednesday)
On pages 280-281 do: Exercise 7.7abc. For (b) compute also the mean of the sample mean and the standard error of the sample mean. How do these values compare with the population mean and population standard deviation? (Here you first need to compute the population mean and the population standard deviation, so your probabilities for each of the 5 values will each be 1/5).
Additional Problem: Repeat (a) and (b) for exercise 7.7 if the probabilities associated with the population values are given by the following:
p(1) = .2, p(3) = .1, p(5) = .1, p(7) = .4, p(9) = .2.
After you have constructed the sampling distribution of the sample mean, present it graphically, compute the mean of the sample mean, and the standard error of the sample mean. Then compute the population mean and the population standard deviation. How does the mean and standard error of the sample mean compare with the population mean and the population standard deviation?
