Course Description
This honors STAT 515 course will differ from the typical STAT 515 section in the amount covered and class participation required. Hence we will study introductory topics (such as descriptive statistical methods, correlation and regression, basic probability, discrete and continuous random variables, and confidence intervals and hypothesis testing) more deeply than was done in many elementary courses. Rather than an overview of what these methods are and how they are implemented, we will focus on some deeper theoretical and practical considerations behind these methods. We will also cover more advanced topics such as inference for the regression line, analysis of variance, and contingency table analysis which are not covered in a standard introductory course. We will examine several real-world examples which illustrate the types of data analysis studied in this class.
Graded Assignments
Two in-term exams, plus a final exam. Quizzes and homework assignments, including some computer work. Two projects which may require working in groups to analyze real data sets. Class discussion will be a bigger part of this section than in most undergraduate statistics classes.
